For more than four decades, Daria Lesia Twerdochlib has exemplified extraordinary dedication, leadership, and service within the Ukrainian-Canadian community. Her lifelong commitment to volunteerism spans cultural preservation, youth mentorship, charitable fundraising, community development, and educational leadership. Through her work with organizations in Mississauga, such as the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada (UCWLC), Ukrainian Youth Association (UYA), Barvinok Ukrainian Dance School, St. Mary’s Dormition Church, St. Sofia’s Catholic Elementary School, and St. Nicholas Saturday School), Daria has made a profound and lasting impact on generations of families.
As Fundraising Coordinator for St. Mary’s Dormition Branch UCWLC, Daria organized the 5 km “Solidarity with Ukraine” Walkathons since 2022. This event has raised critical funds for humanitarian relief, supported Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUET) children, and mobilized the community during a time of crisis. Her ability to unite volunteers, inspire participation, and create meaningful impact reflects her exceptional leadership and compassion.
Daria’s leadership is distinguished by innovation and measurable results. As President of the Barvinok Dance Group (1999–2005), she strengthened organizational structure, expanded programming, and coordinated the landmark 2004 Tour of Ukraine, enabling 40 young dancers to perform internationally. Her work with St. Mary’s Dormition Church included chairing the Annual Yarmarok/Christmas Market Bazaar, significantly increasing fundraising capacity and community engagement.
Daria’s volunteerism is further strengthened by her 35 year career as a teacher and mentor. Her work in special education, her advocacy for inclusive learning, and her mentorship of new teachers demonstrate her lifelong commitment to uplifting others. Her contributions were recognized with the OECTA Staff Representative Award (1997) and Communication Award (2002).
Known for her positivity, humility, and unwavering dedication, Daria continues to serve as a pillar of the Ukrainian Canadian community. Her legacy is one of cultural preservation, community empowerment, and compassionate leadership. She is a profoundly deserving candidate for the Trillium Volunteerism Award.
