Nataliya Popovych

Наталія ПоповичToronto

Nataliya Popovych is an exceptionally deserving recipient of the Trillium Award for her outstanding and longstanding contributions to the preservation, celebration, and advancement of Ukrainian culture within Canada. Through decades of leadership, advocacy, education, and community engagement, she has become a driving force within the Canadian-Ukrainian community and an inspiring example of service, cultural stewardship, and innovation.

As President of the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women Toronto Branch, Nataliya has demonstrated visionary leadership and an unwavering commitment to strengthening Ukrainian cultural identity and community connection. Under her guidance, the organization has flourished through innovative fundraising initiatives, cultural programming, and humanitarian efforts. One of her most celebrated achievements has been the renowned and signature “Vechornitzi” events, which she has successfully led and expanded over sixteen sold-out productions. These events have become treasured cultural gatherings that unite generations through music, dance, tradition, and celebration while simultaneously raising critical support for humanitarian aid initiatives in Ukraine, including contributions toward relief efforts and support for displaced families.

Nataliya’s dedication to preserving and promoting Ukrainian arts and culture is evident in every aspect of her work. She spearheaded the highly successful “Musical Fridays at the Old Mill,” a monthly cultural initiative that showcases Ukrainian music, artists, and performers while bringing together members of the wider community in celebration of Ukrainian heritage. These evenings have created meaningful opportunities for artists to share their talents and for audiences to experience the richness and vibrancy of Ukrainian musical traditions in both traditional and contemporary forms.

Her leadership extends deeply into youth engagement and cultural education. As Chair of the Ukrainian Youth Association Ensemble Committee, Nataliya has played an instrumental role in organizing concerts, performances, and cultural showcases featuring beloved ensembles and choirs such as Dibrova, Zhaivir, and Prolisok. Through this work, she has ensured that younger generations remain connected to their cultural roots while fostering pride, artistic expression, and community participation. Her mentorship and encouragement have inspired countless young people to embrace and celebrate their Ukrainian identity.

Nataliya has also made remarkable contributions to cultural education and awareness through media and storytelling. As producer and host of the radio program Song of Ukraine, she has created a valuable platform that highlights Ukrainian music, current events, interviews, and cultural discussions. Through this program, she continues to educate audiences, amplify Ukrainian voices, and strengthen cultural awareness within the broader community.

Nataliya’s literary contributions further reflect her dedication to preserving stories and educating future generations. She is the author of the published book Destiny, which tells the extraordinary story of Natalka Talanchuk, a survivor of the Holodomor, and chronicles her journey to freedom through Pier 21 in 1949. By documenting and sharing these stories, Nataliya ensures that important chapters of Ukrainian history are remembered, honoured, and passed on to future generations. In addition, she has written children’s storybooks, including the Emma, Mia and Friends series, demonstrating her commitment to engaging young readers and fostering cultural understanding from an early age.

Beyond cultural programming, Nataliya has been a passionate and visible advocate for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. As a political activist, she has consistently stood on the front lines of rallies, protests, and advocacy campaigns in support of Ukraine and its ongoing struggles. Her voice, leadership, and courage have mobilized communities and inspired meaningful action and solidarity.

Above all, Nataliya Popovych’s leadership impact is truly remarkable. She embodies dedication, compassion, resilience, and service. Her tireless commitment to community building, cultural preservation, education, mentorship, and humanitarian advocacy continues to uplift and inspire all those around her. Through every initiative she leads, Nataliya strengthens the fabric of the Canadian-Ukrainian community while ensuring that Ukrainian culture, traditions, and stories continue to thrive for future generations.
